Happiness is…

March 28, 2009

It’s Saturday night.  Little Man is being rocked asleep by Dear Husband.  (Actually I think DH is now asleep with LM on his lap)  Dog is walked.  Trash is taken out.  Dishes are done. Dishwasher running.

Sex In The City movie is in the DVD player.  I know it got bad reviews, but I got it from the library, so at least I can enjoy it without feeling like I got ripped off.

Bowl of ice cream eaten.

Bottle of beer half drunk.

Couch is comfy, dog is sleeping.  Movie is about to begin.  Ahhhhh….. press play.

Ch ch ch changes…

March 26, 2009

So, I accepted a new position with my former employer.

The good news is that I don’t have to go through the hassle of changing medical insurance. I have been back and forth about all my options, and when this came up, I said yes.   I kept on thinking about all my options and what would be best for my family.  I know that staying at home with Little Man (LM) has been fun, I was here for his first steps, and it’s been relaxing and wonderful.  But good medical insurance and a little financial relief plus less stress on my Dear Husband (DH) is also a blessing.  Hard choice to make, but I believe I made the right one for us right now.

The hours are different from my last job, and things around the house will shift again.  I may even need DH to help out with dinners.  DH did ask me to continue this blog, since it has been cathartic.  So, he will make sure I have time at night (we share a computer) to write.

LM doesn’t quite understand what will happen, but his friends at daycare will be happy to see him.  I bought him a new farm lunch bag to hold his bigger sippie cups and bottles.

Me, I bought myself a new lunch tote also, and am doing laundry so I have clean clothes.  I have been in jeans and tees for several weeks now, so time to get out the old workclothes!  Luckily with this job I am not required to wear suits, hose and heels.  (save money on expensive hose that only lasts one wearing!)

Another change.  But it’s all good.  We count our blessings.  1, 2, 3.

So, did Apple use babies to test out their I-Phone?

iphoneYou have to wonder.  LM got his hands on his Aunt’s iphone, and in a few minutes he was able to play music, move the icons around, and more.  He sat there, listening to Norah Jones, rocking, making the icons change…

Oh wait, how did he change the channel from PBS Kids to Cartoon Network?  Batman is not nearly toddler appropriate, but I guess he didn’t want to watch Sid the Science Kid… where did he find the remote?

And now he has moved on to steal the computer mouse… and banging on the keyboard…

He’ll have his own blog soon.

Hand me downs

March 21, 2009

I love hand me downs, who doesn’t?  Well, LM has lots of hand me downs, but where to put it all?

I have been doing the cycle, I get clothes from friends for LM, LM wears the clothes, and then I put them in a bag to send to my friends with Little Men of their own.  This morning, I am working on that cycle.  I have a bag set for my friends with the twin 4 month olds, and a bag set for my friend with the 9 month old.  I have summer clothes, sleepers, shoes and more.  Some items LM only wore once.

For some time, I was afraid to let go of my fave outfits.  But now, I figure I am in the circle.  When another babe comes into our lives, my friends will send me their hand-me-downs once again, or send back the ones I sent to them.  Then, I guess the circle will be complete.

Money on the mind

March 20, 2009

Yes, we are in a recession.  Yes, the Nation’s Unemployment Rate is the highest it’s been in 20+ years.  (article here)

So, what do we do?

I have been getting lots of emails about cost saving measures, and I have been trying to make cuts where I can, especially since we are down to one income right now since I was laid off.  But going to one income from 2, is a challenge. Where did all that money go?

For us it was mostly consumables, we are foodies, and I love good bath products.  Also, I did spend a lot of clothing.  Time used to be too precious to stake out a sale or hunt at Marshalls, TJMaxx or Filene’s Basement.  Now, if I need something, I would rather hunt than pay.  A few months ago, I made a trip to Marshalls and was reminded of the great deals you can find – I found a $300 suit for $30!  And it’s paid off, I have worn it to 2 job interviews now.

So, for all of us trying to save money, I will share some links (if you don’t already know them)

Why is this on the mind?  Because we are all going through it.  Yesterday, DH and I had pizza cravings, but only a few dollars in cash (I always forget to get cash).  Plus, I want us to make sure we are sticking to this budget I created this month, and I would rather have a nice date this Saturday (we have babysitters after all)  So, I looked at him, and said, give me a few minutes… and 15 minutes later, pizza was made with items from the fridge.  It tasted great!  And was healthier too!  Here’s the recipie – you have all the food in your fridge too:

  1. Pita Bread
  2. Tomato sauce (just a jar of Ragu because it was10 for $10.00 deal)
  3. Mozzarella cheese (in our case, in the string cheese type, I had to shred it)
  4. Spinach
  5. Feta cheese
  6. Pizza seasoning on top

I put it in the oven for a few minutes, and 45 seconds in our broiler (our oven runs hot) and voila!  And LM loved it!  (He loves pita)

I know, this is no surprise to more experienced Moms.  But, hey, this is a learning process.  And I am trying to treat each day as an adventure.

Happy Friday!

To work or not to work?

March 19, 2009

To work or not to work? (I know, that question again…)

So, since I am on unemployment since I got laid off last month, one of the rules is that you have to actively seek work.  You have to send a minimum of 2 resumes to open jobs a week.  You have to look, and you have to be available for work if it comes your way.

All this can be hard when juggling a toddler.  I have learned that Curious George and Cherios can distract while I am job searching online or sending out resumes.  I have lined up friends and family to watch him just in case of an interview.  I have to be ready to answer the calls if they come.

Well, what does one do if you get an offer?

I am enjoying staying at home, but not prepared for the financial shift of a one parent salary.  I guess, you never are.  I did promise myself if I do return into the workforce, I will actually take those vacation days, I will not take work home with me, I limit weekends and nights, I will try to make it to more day care events.  Of course, If I return into the workforce, Dear Husband will get to spend more time with Little Man, much more time, since he loves taking him to day care and visiting him during lunch.

Does money buy happiness?  No, but I am beginning to believe that good health benefits do.
